Women’s Jiu Jitsu in Azle: Women Are Welcome in Every Class at AJJ
If you’ve been curious about jiu jitsu but wondered whether there’s a place for you on the mat, here’s the short answer: yes. At Annunziato Jiu Jitsu in Azle, women are welcome in every class. You don’t need a training partner or any experience to get started.
Does AJJ have women’s jiu jitsu classes?
Every class at AJJ is coed, and women are welcome in all of them. That includes beginner classes, all-level classes, advanced classes, and open mat. Our coaches want every student to feel welcome and comfortable on the mat.
When you’re new, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable with your first training partners, so you can relax and focus on learning. And because women are welcome in every class, you can pick whichever class fits your week.
Which class should I start with?
If you’re brand new, start with a beginner or all-level adult class. These are the best fits for a first visit, based on our current class schedule (link “class schedule” to https://annunziatobjj.com/schedule/):
Monday: Beginner Adults (No Gi), 6:30–7:30 PM
Tuesday: All Level Adults, 12:00–1:00 PM
Tuesday: Beginner Adults, 7:30–8:30 PM
Wednesday: Beginner Adults (No Gi), 6:30–7:30 PM
Thursday: All Level Adults, 12:00–1:00 PM
Thursday: Beginner Adults, 7:30–8:30 PM
Friday: All Level Adults, 6:30–8:00 PM
Saturday: Beginner Adults, 11:00 AM–12:00 PM
The Tuesday and Thursday noon All Level class is beginner friendly and works well if evenings are busy with kids, work, or practice schedules.
Adult classes are for ages 14 and up, and coaches place teens based on size and maturity.
What happens at my first class?
Your first class is free, and you don’t have to know anything about jiu jitsu to come. Wear comfortable workout clothes without zippers, buttons, or pockets. Bring a water bottle and a pair of slides or flip-flops to wear off the mat.
When you arrive, the coach will introduce himself and pair you with an assistant coach or an experienced student who stays with you for the whole class. You’ll learn and practice under the coaches’ supervision, and two beginners never spar on their own. You set the pace, and you’re always free to take a break and get a drink.

Is jiu jitsu good for women who want self-defense skills?
Jiu jitsu teaches you how to stay calm in close contact, keep good position, and get back to your feet. Many people find that regular training helps them feel more prepared and more confident in their own body. At AJJ, there’s no separate self-defense class, because jiu jitsu training is the training. Our self-defense for beginners post explains what that looks like in a real class. (link “self-defense for beginners post” to https://annunziatobjj.com/self-defense-beginners-azle-jiu-jitsu/)
What is Queens of the Mat?
Queens of the Mat is a women’s open mat, and AJJ hosts two of them this season:
Sunday, November 22, 2026, 1:30–3:00 PM
Sunday, December 13, 2026, 1:30–3:00 PM
An open mat is time on the mat to drill and roll with other women at your own pace. It’s free to attend, and it’s open to everyone, including complete beginners and non-members, just like a regular class. Wear comfortable workout clothes without zippers, buttons, or pockets. Bring a water bottle and a pair of slides or flip-flops to wear off the mat.
Queens of the Mat is a great way to meet other women who train. You’re also welcome in any of our regular classes, any day of the week.
I’m a mom. Can this fit my schedule?
A lot of our adult students are parents. Here are a few ways families make it work:
Train while your kids train. Kids classes run Monday through Friday at 5:00 PM (Beginner Kids) and 5:45 PM (Advanced Kids), right before evening adult classes.
Daytime option. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the All Level Kids class runs 11:00 AM–12:00 PM, followed by All Level Adults from 12:00–1:00 PM. Your kids are welcome to hang out at the gym while you train the noon class.
Saturday mornings. Little Heroes and All Level Kids start at 10:00 AM, followed by Beginner Adults at 11:00 AM.
